Airport Profile
In late 2007, the Wills Point City Council gave Wills Point Economic Development Corporation permission to develop Wills Point Municipal Airport. The EDC formed an Airport Advisory Board and chartered them to conduct an assessment of the airport, focusing on future growth and demand of the community. Van Zandt County Judge and Commissioners approved the name change to Van Zandt County Regional Airport, recognizing future utilization of this asset could reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality in the county, and expand economic opportunity to the entire region.
Since that time, improvements to help ensure pilots of safe landings and take-offs have been:
- Sprigging, fertilizing and herbicide
- trees and deteriorated fence removed
- Fog Seal applied to the runway and striping added
- dilapidated runway lighting system removed and replaced with a new low intensity lighting system
- Underground electrical service installed to a new meter base, control panel, timer and electronic eye
- New rotating beacon installed
- Electronic entrance gate and keypad installed with 24 hour access to all emergency personnel through transmitters in all emergency vehicles, mounted keypad, or locked box when no electricity is available
- A pipe & rail fence was installed deterring vehicles from driving around the gate to gain access to the runway
- Entrance lighting and lighted masonry signs were installed as well as a 24’ culvert and paved entrance
- TxDOT completed a parking lot in the summer of 2011 and have continued with improvements
- Construction of a 4200 square foot terminal building with large conference room, refreshment area, office space, large media room, 12-foot porch on runway and Hwy. 64 side and 24-hour access to pilot planning, lounge, shower and restrooms was completed in November 2014. This facility has adjacent property available for corporate hangars and nested t-hangars.
- A runway overlay project with total ramp reconstruction and ramp with additional tie downs was completed in January 2016.
- 4 Unit T-Hangars were constructed in 2023
Along with improvements, many services are now available. These services include 100LL avgas fuel, courtesy car, limited aircraft maintenance, limited flight instruction and helicopter repair station. Through The Fence Agreements with adjacent land owners have been executed and filed with TxDOT Aviation.
In 2005, TxDOT Aviation conducted a comprehensive survey of all Texas General Aviation Airports. Van Zandt County Regional Airport then reflected $37,000.00 total economic impact to our community.
